Monisha Edwards pours a batch of Scent & Fire candles in her Dallas workspace.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the United States and Black- and woman-owned candle brand Scent & Fire and its founder Monisha Edwards are using the month to promote mental health and support another small business through sales donations.
Throughout the month of May, Dallas-based Scent & Fire will donate a portion of its sales from its Safe Space Candle to Gem City Selfie Museum in Dayton, Ohio, with the goal of supporting the museum and its chromotherapy and phototherapy elements. The Safe Space Candle, scented with white tea, thyme, jasmine and bergamot, pairs with a Safe Space Scent + Sounds playlist on Apple Music.
Edwards founded Scent & Fire while seeking out creative and holistic outlets to help with her mental health issues. Edwards, who has been diagnosed with PTSD, seasonal affective disorder and anxiety, began experimenting with aromatherapy and candle making while trying to find medication alternatives. Edwards
NaAsiaha Simon, who founded Gem City Selfie Museum, another Black- and woman-owned business, struggled with her mental health after overcoming two brain tumors. She started her selfie museum to give people a place to create positive experiences through photography, incorporating interactive illustrations to help alleviate anxiety, depression and stress in the museum using elements of chromotherapy and phototherapy.
