Give your home an extra pinch of holiday spirit.
It’s time to light a festive scented candle and enjoy some downtime before the big day.
We may not experience a white Christmas Down Under, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy burning a cosy candle when the festive season rolls around.
Winter-inspired scents still hold their own here at this time of year thanks to the way we experience Christmas in popular culture, says Nicole Eckels, co-founder of Glasshouse Fragrances, who says their White Christmas candle encapsulates classic festive aromas of eggnog, mulled wine, spicy cinnamon and cloves.
“This idea feels linked to the cinema and the romantic idea of Christmas that’s often portrayed in old classics such as Miracle On 34th Street, It’s A Wonderful Life or even more recent movies like Love Actually and The Holiday, where it’s associated with the snow and cold weather,” New York-born Eckels tells Body+Soul.

“Even in parts of the US where it doesn’t snow, people still dress their houses as if it were a white Christmas.”
Gerard Richardson, brand marketing manager at Adore Beauty, agrees:
“We always think of Christmas as being gathered around the fire, snow falling outside and carols by the tree – it’s the quintessential Christmas. I think there’s a comfort and familiarity to this picture.”
However, if the Northern Hemisphere Yuletide scents don’t do much for you, there’s so much home-grown inspiration to draw from instead.
Eckels, who has spent 15 years in Sydney since establishing Glasshouse Fragrances in 2006, loves the scents of sweet seasonal treats. This year’s Merry & Bright candle was inspired by the fresh fruit on a pavlova, which she describes as “sugary sweet, perfectly balanced with fresh berries and passionfruit”.
For Richardson, it’s also about the fresh, fruity scents, such as in Circa’s Raspberry & Rhubarb candle: “[It’s a] Christmas treat and Aussie must-have all in one.” However, ultimately, he advises choosing an aroma that’s personal.
“Scent and memories go hand in hand. We often associate a special place or time in our life with a fragrance – there’s no difference with a candle.”
