Receiving birthday gifts can be an awkward ordeal, with all eyes on you as everyone watches for a reaction. However, few experiences went as badly as this woman's, who smashed a $350 candle seconds after getting it. This definitely puts the disappointment you showed at another pair of socks into perspective.

The moment was captured in a video that has since gone viral online, gaining 3.8 million views in just five days. Captioned simply "#HappyBirthday," the clip has left everyone cringing.

The video starts with a woman pulling a box out of a bag, before setting it down on the chair for all to see. She then unveils the grand present, revealing a luxurious candle. It cost $350.

"The Feathers Maasai scented candle is made in opaline hand-blown glass with touches of red. Its mysterious fragrance will take you to the heart of the Maasai lands where men in red draperies roam the searing savannah," makers Baobab Collection wrote.

The woman did not get $350 worth of value out of the candle though.

Lifting the gift into the air, she appeared pleased with the candle, looking at it fondly from below. She lifted it a little too high, however, losing balance of the expensive present.

It flung backwards and out of her hands, striking the floor and producing a loud noise of shattering glass, followed by the screams of everyone watching.

A second video showed the aftermath of the horror, and the silence was deafening. The woman bowed over and leaned into the arms of someone else, but was met with reassuring comments that it was no big deal from some guests.

One guest even vowed to buy her another candle.

The average birthday gift for a friend or family costs between $25 and $50, according to gift site Your Surprise, making this $350 candle far above average and an extremely costly blunder.

Despite the woman's misfortune causing upset for her, it seemed to entertain millions online, as they filled the comments on TikTok.

"I saw it coming," noted one TikTok user.

"That looked and sounded expensive," added another.

One user joked: "The pain, I can feel it."

Earlier this week, another birthday surprise went viral online for very different reasons. A dad's heartwarming reaction to finding out a puppy was his present captured people online, warming hearts across the net.

After realizing she is for him, the dad walked over to the puppy, picking her up and snuggling her as he struggled to hold back tears.
