Kitchn is a source of inspiration for a happier, healthier life in your kitchen.

Chipotle knows you’ve been sneaking lemonade in their water cups, now they want you to sniff lemonade in their water cups too.

To celebrate National Lemonade Day on August 20, the fast-casual Mexican restaurant dropped a limited-edition lemonade-scented candle that looks like their free water cup.

For those unaware, the candle is a reference to Chipotle customers who get “confused” at the self-serve beverage machine, “accidentally” filling their cup with lemonade instead of the complimentary water. It’s a secret hack that hasn’t been a secret for some time now, seeing as Chipotle has tweeted about it over the years:

In a 2019 tweet, the company also joked about the idea of making a lemonade-scented candle:

The soy candle, which has already sold out, was priced at $28, and every purchase will included a promo code that can be exchanged for a free lemonade.

Last year, Chipotle also poked fun at their customers, specifically those who think cilantro tastes like soap, by releasing Cilantro Soap. It sold out in only a day.

In a statement, the company explained that these gag gifts are their way of connecting with their customers (and maybe a veiled message to lemonade thieves that they know).

“Social is the premier destination for us to listen to and engage with our superfans,” Chris Brandt, chief marketing officer at Chipotle, said. “When they see these lighthearted tributes to social chatter and fan behavior, they feel even more connected to Chipotle.”
