From the Rathbornes/Maser candle collaboration
In a meeting of the old and the new, Rathbornes, the oldest candlemakers in the world, have partnered with internationally acclaimed Irish artist Al Maser – known for his street art – for a new take on its luxury range.
“ We never collaborated with anyone before,” said Siobhán Kehoe, brand and commercial director with Rathbornes, whose second biggest market after Ireland is Japan.
“We decided it would be nice to partner with an Irish artist and through that process, we thought everything was very white and contemporary. So we decided, while we’re doing this, why not bring in something new and exciting?”
She hopes to appeal to a younger audience with the vibrant limited edition, featuring Maser’s distinctive style.
He even collaborated on the fragrance.
“During lockdown when I had some downtime, I began to hike and explore the Irish countryside, where I used to go to art camp. I was hugely inspired by the scents of nature and wanted to incorporate them into the design and the candle scent, bringing the outdoors back indoors,” said Maser.
The limited edition range does not come cheap. The hand-poured glass 3-Wick Candle costs €150 (with 80 hours of burn time), while the reed diffuser costs €100. However, Kehoe hopes they will be seen as collectors’ items and Rathbornes plans to work with another Irish artist next year.
“The hope is that in 10 years’ time people will be able to say I have all 10 pieces from Rathbornes artist collaborations.”
Luxury watch brand Montblanc has set its dial toward Dublin as it looks to open a new boutique.
Montblanc recently submitted a planning application to Dublin City Council for the store on Anne Street, near Grafton Street. The retail unit was occupied by makeup brand Inglot, which announced the closure of its stand-alone stores in 2020.
Luxury watch brands are queueing up to enter the Irish market. Earlier this month, Paul Sheeran Jewellers announced it agreed a lease at the new Chatham & King development off Grafton Street, where it would sell some of the biggest luxury watch brands, including Cartier and Breitling.
The row between the family that owns the Powerscourt Estate and the company behind the Powerscourt Hotel over a staff accommodation complex has escalated to An Bord Pleanála.
According to ABP’s website, the decision by Wicklow County Council to approve plans for the 56-bed staff complex has been appealed.
A firm linked to the Slazenger family and a planning consultant are the appellants. ABP will decide the case in early January 2023.
