A new collaboration between lifestyle brand SGFCO and the beloved Pineapple Whip dessert stands may entice buyers to have a taste, but this one is just for smelling.

SGFCO launched the sale of their Pineapple Whip Candle on Sunday, and Springfieldians were eager to get their hands on one. The candle sold out in less than 24 hours.

Jesse Tyler, SGFCO co-founder, described the Pineapple Whip Candle as "breezy," with hints of pineapple and coconut. Each 8.5 ounce soy candle is handmade by Lionheart Creations in Lamar.

Tyler said he first had the idea for a Pineapple Whip Candle a few years ago, after Dunkin' Donuts and Homesick, a candle-making brand, released their Original Blend and Old Fashion candles.

Co-founder of All True, a creative studio in Springfield, Tyler said a big part of creating successful marketing campaigns is analyzing national trends and localizing them for an intended audience.

"For example, with Dunkin' Donuts doing a line of candles, we thought, 'What would that look like for a beloved Springfield brand?'" Tyler said. "Pineapple Whip was the first choice, such a distinct and loved brand in Springfield. It's really recognizable, playful and fun; it just makes people happy."

SGFCO pitched the collaborative product to Pineapple Whip before settling on a candlemaker, and there was no hesitation.

"Knowing Jesse and what (SGFCO) is all about, I liked that they would want to do (a collaboration) with us," Zach Fortner, Pineapple Whip co-owner, said. "I was honored that they thought of us at all."

For now, Pineapple Whip Candles are exclusively a SGFCO product, available for $22. But both Tyler and Fortner said they enjoy the idea of selling the candles at Pineapple Whip locations in the future.

Ten percent of each candle sale is donated to Ozark Greenways, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a trail system in Springfield that connects the community.

"(Ozark) Greenways, to me, is an organization that can provide many benefits to absolutely everybody," Fortner said of why he chose the nonprofit. "Most nonprofits have to choose a segment of people or a particular cause and stick with it, but the thing I like about the Greenways is that everyone stands to benefit from that."

As of Wednesday, Pineapple Whip Candles are on back order, due to the initial sell out.

"I was so scared of ... being stuck with a bunch of pineapple candles, our office smelling like pineapple and my house smelling like pineapple," Tyler said. "I was so nervous about that, we did a pretty small order, just a few dozen, and they sold out as soon as Pineapple Whip posted it (on social media). We totally underestimated how crazy it would go."

Tyler said SGFCO has ordered another 200 candles from Lionheart Creations that are currently in production. Soy candles take about two weeks to cure, so Tyler anticipates the next round of products to be shipped in mid-April.

Pineapple Whip Candles can be ordered on the SGFCO website. For product updates, check the SGFCO Instagram or Facebook.
