To celebrate this historic occasion, a number of events are scheduled to take place over the bank holiday weekend. Take a look at some of our picks, and make sure to mark your calendar!
The jubilee festivities kick off at 11 am with the spectacular Trooping the Colour parade. This is a Royal tradition and has been used to mark official monarch birthdays and jubilees, alike, for over 260 years. You can expect to see over 1,200 soldiers in the parade, as well as more than 400 musicians and 200 horses, who will be accompanied by members of the Royal Family as they make their way from Buckingham Palace to the grounds of the Horse Guard’s Parade.
There will also be the traditional lighting of the beacons — lit for the first time ever in each Commonwealth nation.
Friday brings a Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, a beautiful way to give thanks to Her Majesty for her years of service.
On Saturday, the Platinum Party at the Palace takes place. This is a huge event that will be attended by 22,000 people — 5,000 of those being key workers. Broadcast live on BBC One, this party will feature a star-studded line up of guests and amazing performances, including Queen, Sir Elton John and Diana Ross, among many others.
Members of the Royal Family, including Her Majesty, are also expected to attend the Derby at Epsom.
The Big Jubilee Lunch is the main event on Sunday. Over 60,000 people across the UK have signed up to host local events, ranging from garden barbecues and picnics to craft workshops and charity fundraisers. And finally, there will be the Platinum Jubilee Pageant. This event will bring everyone together to celebrate and pay tribute to Her Majesty’s years of service, using digital technology to showcase iconic moments in her life and showcase how the UK has changed over the years.
